6. Do everything out of love.

A friend of mine who’s spent a lot of time getting enlightened spiritually once passed along this nugget of wisdom to me: “Everything you do, you do out of love, or out of fear. I just try to do everything out of love now.”

What this means is, for example, if I stay home and don’t get out there and do shows or write music or whatever, it’s because I FEAR that no one will like it, or I’ll get criticized, or it will never go anywhere. If I get out there and do the things I LOVE, it’s because my LOVE of doing them outweighs everything else.

Basically, everything can be looked at this way. If you say no to a date, it’s probably because you FEAR that you’ll have a bad time or lead the person on etc. But if you say yes, it’s probably out of your LOVE for your fellow human being and new experiences etc.

Live is much richer when you do things out of love than out of fear. Whatever you’re doing in your life, do it out of love. Feel free to leave examples of this principle from your own life below. 🙂

  1. Donnie Darko: Life isn’t that simple. I mean who cares if Ling Ling returns the wallet and keeps the money? It has nothing to do with either fear or love.

Kitty Farmer: Fear and love are the deepest of human emotions.

Donnie Darko: Okay. But you’re not listening to me. There are other things that need to be taken into account here. Like the whole spectrum of human emotion. You can’t just lump everything into these two categories and then just deny everything else!
